Swedes are always happy when someone half important visits our unknown country. We're that naive. That is because you have so many only half important people here. Every country likes to get PR, no matter from where. If it's good PR then fine. It helps to promote tourism too, and that means income and goodwill. This story has gone down well - albeit with some rather strange visions of Vasaloppet - and promotes Sweden even more in the UK. Anything that is good should be appreciated. It takes a long time to build up a good reputation - that can be gone in a flash. Enjoy the fact that this is good stuff, despite the way the journalists get things so muddled. Be happy for Sweden, be happy for the UK and that people from there are promoting your country. It isn't being naive, it is being practical and surely that is what Swedes are - in the main. |

Was Pippa really promoting Sweden?
Or was it simply part of her Charity obligations? |

Was Pippa really promoting Sweden? . Or was it simply part of her Charity obligations? Pippa was promoting herself and her charity. The Swedish and UK press did the Swedish promotion. As Vik said, if everyone who reads the articles, which will include royalists across the globe, gets a positive impression of Sweden then it's mission accomplished. She could have easily have been generating news about 5 days (O Ringen), flooded campsites and toilets... which would have been not so good for Sweden. Again, if it bothers you that much don't read it and don't think about it, but one thing is for certain, her little visit to this country has done neither of them any harm at all (or you for that matter). ps. I think Julielou is bit jealous Pippa got a better vasaloppet time than her? |

From the UK point of view she was doubtless promoting her charity, from the Swedish point of view it was a chance to promote Sweden. What does it matter in the end, really. Both countries get some PR, and good PR for once, so why bicker? Envy or something ...

I think one really does have to ask the ethics behind those looking to profit or self gain on the backs of those looking to do good deeds through charity & hard work.
The same way as steeling a white stick away from a blind child, just so you can show that you have had some way in being part of that sticks fabrication process. Its sad, and a desperate way to attempt self recognition. And over shadows the good attempting to be done. (very classless) Using the association of the British monarchy for charitable work is one thing. But using such an event to use as propaganda and self recognition of a nation, on the back of a charitable deed is just low and cowardly. In regards to the question, is Pippa royal? Only through association, and even then there is a pecking order and subsequent and protocol that need to be followed to be allowed such association. And while there is no doubt she is helping keep her back end up (*wink*), allowing others to ride on her bridesmaid train at the cost of charities is very questionable. |

you really do think quite deep in shallow waters don't you. You're having a laugh surely. She has come under media spotlight since her sisters wedding, she makes a living doing various event organising things, she decides to do something for charity using the new found status to the benefit of others and you knock her. I can assure you that if she just wanted the status and a leg up, there are much easiers things to do than skiing vasaloppet? I presume you've done it yourself? Regardless of what the media and press did to hype it all, it's irrelavant and it harms no one.(apart from you and Julielou). |

Props due, where Props deserved. She raced for herself and charity. </end of> But by having the media looking to use her association to fame for the promotion of something else is low and classless. Otherwise she should have been employed as an envoy to promote the Swedish Tourist board. |

I think its great. She has done more in a weekend than I have managed in 24 years to explain what this cross country skiing lark is all about.
The story behind the race (more than likely the Mora bit is a fable): However it is said: Christian the Tyrant who had (in the Stockholm Bloodbath) invited the nobility of Sweden to a party and then chopped their heads off. The Swedish Guerrilla leader Gustav Vasa came to Mora in an attempt to rally support to fight Christian, The peasants and farmers refused. Gustav skied for exile Norway. News then reached Mora of Christians tax rise. They changed their minds, one thing to chop heads off nobility in Stockholm, but raise their taxes, no way. Two local brothers skied from Mora and caught up with Gustav near Sälen. The trio returned, the Guerrilla army went down to Stockholm and overthrough the Danes. Gustav became the first King of Sweden in 1523. (June 6th). So there is a royal connection. However big mistake on Sunday. The Swedish commentator remarked upon the fast time by the Danish Prince who also took part saying "Gustav Vasa would have been proud". Er NO! - The last thing old Gustav needed in the ski tracks was a fast royal Dane. |
