Government doesn't want to stop SMSs when driving

Can't get my head around this

According to this, Sweden is one of the safer countries to drive in. Mobile phone use or not.
My personal opinion is that anything that diverts your attention from the road is bad. Smoking, fiddling with the satnav, phones etc.

Wonder what the attitude of businesses and employers are about SMS when driving.

See everying from big trucks to simple vans with drivers in them, texting almost all the time.

Sure the drivers would like to have to stop, and take a break with a call while the employer wants the person continually following new directions.

While employees driving to work, and back home might well prefer not having to text because it just adds stress to the day, whatever the source and receiver of the calls.

Just think of the chaos during rush-hour to and from work. Would make what happens now seem like a picnic.

And isn't today's government their representatives?

Absolute lunacy for a country that has pioneered many road safety devices.

Also lunacy to say that such a law cannot be applied.

For example when an accident or incident has occurred it is not rocket science to check if the drivers mobile was in use at the time and throw the book at him/her if it proves to be the case.

No, they like the illusion of everyone being consulted, but in the end they do what the boss tells them and never complain. If the government says they pulled a study out of their ass that says texting while driving is not proven to be more dangerous, then the people will believe them.

Of course the accident rate in Sweden is low. Their roads aren't very busy. Try driving around Amsterdam, amongst the speeding delivery drivers, taxis, bikes, trams and zombie tourists, while texting. You wouldn't get very far.

Don't worry about getting nicked,just fret about whether the guy you hit while texting is going to sue you for damages.

No Worries! ... Legal Damages levels in Sweden are far far less than in countries like UK, USA etc..

Main point here is that the Government didn't say yet it will not implement a law banning texting and phoning whilst driving ... it is Vägverkets report that says it would be useless to do so. Knowing how the Gov. works though, everyone knows they will follow that advice.

Vägverket tend to be more realistic, and not Mummy-Protect-Everyone, than most other Swedish public bodies. Sometimes I feel we need to appreciate that. Look at the earlier example where their report in favour of increasing speed limits to 120Km on certain roads, stating ... people are driving that fast anyway! So makes no difference.

To enforce the ban on mobile use in cars would involve having a greater police presence everywhere on the roads, and as we all know from most recent reports on Police time ... it is hard to get them out, and just think how much extra paper-work!!! ...it was even revealed that they fake the breathtests to meet their quota's biggrin.gif

Personally I do not use My mobile at-all when driving, but I still say ... Three cheers for a realistic view, and for not creating laws for the sake of creating laws.

It's like claiming speed camera prevent accidents ... no they don't!.. It takes a photo of a speeder, before they hit someone/thing. Doesn't prevent anything! Having a law against texting, will only stop those how follow the law... everyone else will still text up-until the moment they have an accident.

You are free NOT to text now ... without a law.

The politicians are elected by the people but when do they listen? Not often. If the majority say NO to the use of mobile phones when driving (i have daily rages about these idiots almost knocking me down) then they will do nothing. The problem is that politicians have dug such a pathetic deep hole for themselves that they cannot get out and dont care what the electors say. They live in a giant cocoon away from reality
