I am a UK citizen. After living and working and paying taxes in Sweden for 2 years, I returned to the UK in Dec 2010 (though my notification to Skatteverket (SKV) was recorded as 5 January 2011) . I continued to work for my Swedish employer (remotely, from the UK) until March 2011. During this time I continued to be taxed at source in Sweden. HMRC in the UK say (correctly, in my opinion) that I became liable to UK tax upon my return to the UK. So I filed a return in the UK (for the FY ending Apr 2011) and claimed foreign tax credits against my Swedish tax paid. Result: no extra tax payment needed in the UK. Now I am completing my 2011 Swedish return. The printed return from SKV says I owe them about 17000 SEK for the year. There does not appear to be any recognition of my departure from Sweden. On my reading of the double taxation treaty, I should only be taxed in the UK having left Sweden. And therefore I should get a refund for all taxes paid subsequent to my departure (but excluding the foreign tax credits I claimed against my UK tax bill). Does anyone know if this is correct or have personal experience in this area?
Thanks, Steve |

Ring up Skatteverket and ask!
Check that the total income is based upon the months Jan-March. It sounds to Me that Your income was sourced in Sweden, as a non-resident Sweden will tax You on income sourced in Sweden. |
