Is there a reason why the standard Swedish rectangular flag isn't flown more often? I've only seen it rarely, whereas many homes fly the long, narrow pennant-type flag.

Due to the 'rules' relating to the times a full flag should be flying, folk usually go for a pennant that can be up ad infinitum. The full flag is then only hoisted on high days and celebration days.

I have an American flag here in Sweden but I refuse to fly it because I think it is inappropriate. Being a duel citizen and living in the best region of Sweden we proudly display the Västra Götaland Flagga on our front door.

Its strange how flags can hold so much weight of different perceptions other than nationality.
For instance, when I think of the US flag ... I cant help but think of flag burning, vietnam, 80's Iran/iraq etc ... And saluting soldiers and maybe superbowl. The UK / United flag (not jack) I think of pop art, The italian job ... exploited clothing lines etc. The England / St. George flag ... I just think Chav Scum. The French flag just summons up visions of a white hanky The Welsh Flag ... just makes me think, I wonder why they chose a dragon over a unicorn? The Japanese flag ... Karate Kid (The Move) The Swedish Flag ... Insecurity The Norwegian flag (the best looking of the nordic countries) The Finish Flag ... (Design error ... Should have had hints of grey in it) |

Byke, in terms of importance, it seems to me that instead of flags and standards, T-Shirts, scarves, bandanas, clothing and jewelry declaring a religion to all that have eyes have replaced them as a preference.
Not that I would ever wear one, but it strikes me as curious that at major stores here in Sweden and elsewhere seem to be sold out of the Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot & Mau T-Shirts, memorabilia, etc; yet have an overstock of items feature that pig Che. National birds, flowers and symbols would likewise make interesting topic of discussion and if we went into the symbols chosen by NGOs and privately held companies there would be some serious rants. |

Damn!
You found me out! I love fermented apples! Visit the Söderholm Air Force Museum and see me in my war regalia...painted on the fighter planes displayed there...those "Bocks" scare me so much, even I would not mess with me! Well maybe, if I had enough apples! |

I would never fly that Västragötaland flag, since having lived in Bohuslän all my time in Sweden, it would have to be the Bohuslän flag for me, but the UK flag does come out in special occasions. I fly the Bohuslän flag on the gable wall throughout the summer season. I do not care for the bigger region, and even less for its flag. So damned garish. The Bohuslän flag may be a bit sombre, not even official either, but to me it reflects the people, and the nature of the landscape.

For many it is the practical problems
- you are not supposed to leave a standard flag up 24/7 - it is meant to be flown from sunrise to sunset - many people fly their standard flags on Sundays and "högtider" - the pennants can be flown 24/7 and indeed many are made of plastic so do not deteriorate |
