OK your excellency, your grace or whatever it is I should call you Laird Muir -keep your shirt on My shirt is well and truly on thanks!! And you don't need to call me anything!! It's not a royal or aristocratic title by any means!! I'm not giving attitude or smart arsed comments on my posts ! The topic seems to have got up a few people's noses so to speak ! It's only a simple enquiry ! |

The Swedish concept of Laird
QUOTE Laird är den skotska motsvarigheten till engelska lord. Det var ursprungligen en lågadelstitel som användes under riddartiden då endast adeln fick äga mark. Laird var en titel man fick som gav en rätt att äga mark. QUOTE A Laird is a member of the gentry and is a heritable title in Scotland. In the non-peerage table of precedence, a Laird ranks below a Baron and above an Esquire. The word Laird, known to have been used as far back as the 15th century and further, is a shortened form of 'laverd', which is an old Scottish word that comes from an Anglo-Saxon term meaning Lord. It also originated from the Middle English word 'lard' also meaning Lord. So the middle English word was Lard, as in pot of. I wonder if I should do some genealogy investigation and see If I can lay claim to the title of Laird of Methven. Nice castle to go with it but I do not fancy the heating bill

My title comes from family/ Clan estate passed down through family! As for buying plots of land/estates from heritage sites etc over the Internet I don't see as a bad

He may indeed have a chip on his shoulders (Who am I to speculate?) But he does have a point in regards to the law and how peerages are not easily sold on the net for them to be legal or recognized, let alone divided into hundreds of smaller pieces and sold off. In regards to conservation in Scotland, while the idea may be "nice" in principle the action is in itself regarded as fraudulent in either mis-selling or in an attempt decide on fraudulent grounds. And while Scottish titles do have a much laxer legal policy, they also don't carry much weight either. The same way that many people look at Louis Vuitton bags and think ... fake. Now in regards to your title, if you really want it to be carried over then I would suggest you contact deed poll in the UK and look at having the title laird to be hard wired into your name. That way you can ensure it is presented on your bank cards etc in sweden as the title is therefore regarded as an actual name rather than a title. IMHO family names and crests relating to history are allot greater in stature than often self assumed titles which conjures up visions of chavs, footballers and wags. |

His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji, Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.
Now, that's a title! A bit hard to fit on a bank card though... |

Rick, M'lud, I think you are getting ideas above your station. Having checked on Ancestry.co.uk . . . .
As to the castle, now if you planned changing the windows in THAT instead of your humble residence, well. |

My Grandfather was a Methven from Methven in Perthshire. I am sure that the current of the ancestral home is a usurper and I shall fight to the bitter end to establish my claim.

Whatever your title, we are equal in law, in Sweden. If you want to flaunt a title or string of qualifications, the UK is the place to be As the OP did not say he is considering committing a crime, "equal before the law" is irrelevant. Presumably he is thinking about social or professional advancement. To the OP. Under the pious pretense of egalitarianism, there is rampant social snobbery in Sweden. I have been handed visiting or business cards bearing titles such as: countess, baroness, ambassador, Ph.D. and the ever-nebulous "project manager." I've seen business cards with so many titles they were printed margin to margin on both sides. IMO, less is more. The real VIPs take Italian industrialist and multi-titled Gianni Agnelli as their model. His austerely simple cards bore nothing but his name. |
