The Brits are preparing a defense for a repeat of the 9/11 suicide bombings, with fighters flying overhead, snipers in helicopters to shoot down highjacked airliners, and 6 ba

I agree with you Trow. It's concentrating on preventing the cockups which should and could have been stopped with normal counter intelligence work. Trow, I cannot help but think that you are applying cold war counter intelligence to twenty-first century threats. The concept of cells existed during the cold war but then it was ultimately controlled by a sovereign country. Today, autonomous cells are deployed for the most part(excluding the Eco-terrorists) by multiple nebulous Islamist radical groups without a rigid hierarchy. The killing of Osama Bin Laden was symbolic and meaningless. There is no head that can be cut, no victory that can be won and no definitive line of communication that can be penetrated to win the war on terrorism. Until this bane on society is repudiated by the communities it is spawned, the attacks will continue. Normal counter intelligence does not apply. There are many numb-nuts out there independent of central guidance lighting their shoes on fire with matches no less to ignite Internet chem explosives. The world has changed. |

QUOTE If a terrorist cell is about to do all the things you imagine, there is no snowball's chance in hell of it being stopped by any missile battery. That whole news story revolved around the reaction of the residents of an apartment block that had been ear-marked as a potential site. What those residents were not aware of, ( along with yourself) was that it was only one of sixteen proposed sites. They were informed about the site on their block, not on other buildings. QUOTE It must be stopped or discovered in buying such an aircraft, preventing the cell from getting in the plane, taking off, flying into central London, and doing its damndest. There is no way that it could be separated from the other airborne vehicles at the last minute before it crashed. For once THF, I agree with you. (where is my medicine?) I actually checked how easy it was to buy a second hand plane. Dead easy. You can buy one as easy as buying a second hand car, or boat. About 150 000 UK Pounds will get you a flying light aircraft. Of course, you are supposed to have numerous permits and licenses to operate a light aircraft but it doesn't stop you actually handing over the cash to acquire one. Anyone planning a one way / one off, flight just needs it to fly and bollocks to the paper work. As I said previously, if I can consider this scenario, so can a terrorist, and so can MI5. For that reason, you would expect that counter intell has been doing it's job and dealing with threats at the root, as opposed to simply waiting for them to happen. By the same measure, if they had already stamped on a plot like this, they are not going to make it public right now. You say you worked in Intelligence, so you know that terrorism is exactly what it says. It is about creating mass terror and fear. Announcing, prior to the games, that you have squashed a plot to fly a light aircraft into the Olympic stadium, is not going to re-assure people. It is going to cause panic by planting the thought that there may be others in the planning. As the Swedes say, Don't shout hello until you have crossed the river' I think that this particular news story is about deterrent. The further announcement that this missile battery is one of 16 proposed sites is about letting terrorists know that, even if they still have not been sniffed out, they will be taken down before they achieve their goal. As I said previously, I am not an intelligence officer, but how about this? All aircraft wishing to fly in relation to the Olympics coverage, have to take off and land at a designated airfield (RAF Northolt) Every aircraft is fitted with a transponder and each departure is assigned a unique transponder code that is assigned to the aircraft at taxi/take off and entered by the pilot. Anything in the air, that isn't bleeping the right code has not come from the designated press air base, and therefore will get zapped. If I can solve that issue, so can others. |

A missile strike!
I mean, one that lands 40 of 50 miles away, would do the same thing...we vaporize? |

They already have put plans and announced airspace restrictions with special measure for private and training airfields:
http://olympics.airspacesafety.com/ Airfields wishing to use this exemption will need to pre-register using the form below by 1 July 2012. During the restrictions they will then be able to contact Atlas Control to gain a daily squawk code for the airfield. You just engage in gibberish while acting as if you are an authority in anything. |
