Thanks, beef.

Wouldn't take what happens in downtown Stockholm too seriously of being representative.

I know about five or six families well here, and it is so different from my own.

When I was growing up in the wilds of America because my father was an army officer, I had most elementary facilities to help out, ones which were so bad that I was sent off to prep school, thanks to help my WASP grandmother provided, and then went on to college, thanks to way my parents provided. And it was my grandmother, one of now a dead breed, who provided for our wonder summer vacations.

After I graduated, I was on my own, and never went back home except for occasional visits, and it certainly was a struggle which I would never have negotiated except as a draftee in the US Army, and its benefits

The family life here is so different with their helping out in all kinds of ways. The parents provide all kinds of things for their offspring to get going, and keep going.

Here is Lidingö, two to the couples actually set up all their kids in life, with money and opportunities from making a living.

And a couple, of lesser means, is now up in Östersund, taking care of the wife's farm while they go on holiday.

Another better off family still does things together, though the husband has been married to both of the women. I'll never forget when I saw the husband and the ex, along with their daughter, putting up a summer shed for her garden in one of those collective places next to Stockholm University.

Then there is a widow down in Helsingborg who has done everything under sun for her four kids, and their kids.

My parents wouldn't know what to make of it.

Because of the incredibly small text on my screen,
I have misread the title numerous times thinking it says "Are Swedes Inbred" ?

Perhaps you should start thinking for yourself instead of relying of surveys.By the way, I am not criticising Swedes for being the binge drinkers that they most certainly are. ... (show full quote)

Thanks, but I do.

I didn't think you were criticising, I simply offered a different view. And I didn't say they didn't binge drink, I just don't believe they are the biggest ones.

Again, good for you.

I guess you will stop being so patronising once you grow up. If that ever happens. Have a nice day.

Ah! So you are disputing a general comment alluding to the fact that some countries are more/less developed than others? Never mind, I understand that we are all entitled to have our own opinions.

You're new to Sweden I take it.

Beef, don't judge a country by how 10 or 20% live in the capital!

1. More than any nation I have ever known and commonly acknowledged by Swedes themselves.. 2. Er... yes they are.

If Swedes secretly drank the same volume as Brits drink publically, you would need twice as many systems.b.s , open 24/7 and there would still be queue. Rescission alone sells more alcohol annually, than the system buys in totally.

Alcohol consumption per country:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...hol_consumption

Whilst UK drinking is higher, I have a sneaky feeling that the figures don't really show the true Swedish alcohol consumption! With prices so high in the System Bolaget, I have lost count of the number of
out-of-city parties I have been where the order of the day was Home-Brewed vodka etc... biggrin.gif

I was once told that the reason you don't hear much about spirit home-brew arrests in the Swedish country-side is because if they take one, they end up having to take almost everyone biggrin.gif

Cheers! rolleyes.gif

You got it right there Yorkshireman, home brew vodka flows like water through every part of the country I've visited or lived.

Those estimated statistics have got to be a joke.

For instance they estimate the unrecorded alcohol at approximately half of the recorded figure and also they estimate the spirit consumption at approx one tenth of the recorded figure.

I think the true figures would put Sweden near the top of the list..

Other factors to consider such as many more Brits are likely to be honest or in some cases exaggerate their drinking habits.
Whereas in Sweden it tends to brings shame upon the household , so much of it is drunk in secret or at private parties as well as being produced at numerous hidden stills throughout the country.

Basically the Swedish state control system has had much the same disastrous effect as prohibition in the USA all those years ago.

People will neither accept being ripped off or being told how much they can drink and have had little problem finding ways around it.

As for the hardened lost cause alcoholics they can be seen staggering about in just about every town and village centre throughout the land at all times of day and night.
