I'll be coming to Stockholm in august to study at KTH. Can someone please tell me the best place to stay in or around Stockholm so that my travel time is on more than 25 min by public transport? Also, any tips on how to save money while living in Stockholm? I've read many articles here that complain about Stockholm being senselessly expensive.

i think the biggest problem is going to be finding accomodation of any type so you need to start early - some years it has been tent city for the early weeks of term
Living outside Stockholm is not necessarily cheaper and you will have to budget for commuting costs You can save money by shopping in cheaper places such as Lidl, Willys or markets etc |

Finding accommodation in the city can be very difficult for someone who is not already living here. There is more of an abundance of housing in the commuter towns surrounding the city of course. The rents are similar to the city however, so you won't make any savings on rent.
If you are working and live outside the city then you will be entitled to claim back a certain percentage of the money you spent commuting to work/university through tax. Essentially you can get back some of the money you spent commuting, this only applies to areas that are sufficiently outside the metropolitan region though. Good luck |
