I'll be taking the car over to Sweden from the UK and spending several months there. It's open-ended. Probably more than three months.
I want to get breakdown cover (AA style) for the car during that time. The only viable option for that length of trip appears to to be the AA's "Annual European Breakdown Cover" (you have to phone to get it, the online version only runs up to 90 days). But it's £320 even with the member discount. The RAC only cover up to 180 days and, rather bizarrely, they insist that they know the exact return date at the start of the policy. I need cover across Europe (driving from France up to Sweden and back) for each end of the trip. Conceivably I could do each of those as "single trip" cover but I have a strong suspicion that the return leg wouldn't be covered since I'm not starting (there are so many stipulations in this area!). Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? |

Unfortunately,breakdown cover has become a bit of a nightmare. I used to come over by car every year for 4-5 months,and my breakdown cover was with MoreThan,there was NOTHING in the policy,and i read it very carefully,about time restrictions. I used the breakdown service once only after having a hydraulic clutch failure,and while towing a 3.5 ton trailer just outside of Stockholm....it would have been a nasty bill without the cover. Apparently the terms have changed since then,so i dont think you will find an "open" policy. A good search system on Money saving expert website will give you all the options availiable today. Good luck.

@hjoian
Thanks for the Money Saving Expert tip. The policies mentioned on there don't exceed 30 days but they do link through to Money Supermarket which does European comparisons. @Yorkshireman Thanks for that - will have a look at them if we end up living in Sweden but for now I need Europe wide cover. @Sexton Aha! They're perfect! That covers my wife as well, covers the whole year (even the AA's £320 policy is limited to 350 days), has much longer hire car cover (7 days vs. 3 or 4 for the AA, from memory). Nice guy on the phone spoke excellent English and covered all my questions. All you need is the membership number and you're ready (so, no need to wait for things in the post). Just have to hope that I don't need to call anyone after all! |

Just to note that we suffered a rather scary blow-out on a Danish motorway in pouring rain! All was well however the locking wheel-nut would not shift - ADAC were very good at coordinating with the local rescue guys who got us moving with a smile
Just by way of recommending ADAC. Oh also I found that they all spoke very good English or, if not, they immediately passed me to someone who did. |
