Switching jobs and new work permit

Is my old permit invalid

Hello,

Lets say that I am currently employed by company A and I sign a contract with company B and resign from A. It would take me some time (notice period) to start at the new company place, and I should file for my work permit application before that (all quite well understood)

Now, we know that Swedish migration board will take time to process the application. Will it render my previous work permit invalid. My work permit does say that it is for company A and it expires in 2013 (so quite some time before it is expired)

The response that I got from Swedish migration board

>The old UT-card can be used as long as the old permit is not cancelled. Usually the old permit cancels when the new permit approves.

This is ambiguous. When is my UT-card cancelled?

I am also interested in this topic. As far as I've found out so far, if your job B is similar profession as your job A then you just go to migrationsverket to rename your permit and you're done. But if you change profession than the process of getting permit starts over and it appears that you must wait for approval.

I repeat, this is not 100% sure, this is all in theory (I read it on their website) and I have no idea how it works in practice. I also want to find out more, so, anyone else? smile.gif

What happens if I want to change employer or job?
Your work permit is always limited to a certain profession and sometimes also to a particular employer. If your new job and/or employer is not covered by the permit that applies to you, you must apply for a new work permit.
If you have submitted an new application for a work permit for another job you can start working at your new job. You do not need to wait for the new application to be granted. Note that you need to submit your new application before your current work permit expires.

The steps company B must follow are:

1. Advertise the position for minimum 10 days for EU citizens to apply, and they must show Migrationsverket that was done.
2. Prepare the job offer
3. Request an opinion from the relevant Union, if they do not have union agreements they have to identify the union that would normally represent this occupation and seek an opinion.
4. Send the offer to You.

There are also special requirements from 1st of Jan 2012 for certain industries/occupations, and stricter rules for New Companies (those that have traded for less than 12 months).

Once those things are done You have the initial papers that are required for the Work Permit.

They state that the current permit is valid until it is cancelled, nothing wrong with that biggrin.gif ... What they mean is that You can start working in the new job under the old permit whilst they process the new. If they grant the new, they cancel the old. However, if they reject the new application, they will also cancel the old work permit also. Meaning ... the old permit is valid until cancelled.
