I can't eat many nuts, almonds and hazelnuts in particular. Unfortunately this means I can't eat many Swedish cakes and pastries, apparently nuts are the new sugar or something.

Anyway. Today my girlfriend and I went to a very nice bakery/patisserie in Gothenburg. I was very happy to see many of the cakes had labels saying, in Swedish: "made without nuts". I was very pleased to see such an unusual amount of choice. The pleasure didn't last very long, one bite into the cake and I tasted an overwhelming almond flavor. I passed it to my swede to sample and she agreed.

I went back to the counter and asked if it contained almonds, "yes it does"..."but the sign says made without nuts" ... "it doesn't contain nuts" .... "almonds are nuts though!?" .... "well yes, no, not in Swedish"...

I spend a minute or so debating this with utter confusion. I was told that in Swedish nuts are nuts but almonds are mentioned separately from nuts. My girlfriend was as confused as I was about this assertion.

I don't see how they can be allowed to say it does not contain nuts when it most clearly does. I know botanically speaking, almonds are not nuts, nor are peanuts etc, however it was always my understanding that for the purposes of talking about foods and especially alergies, they are most definitely nuts.

I'm not sure what to make of it all, do you consider almonds to be nuts? should I complain to the company's head office? I'm not allergic to almonds, only intolerant but I'm sure that someone who is allergic could easily fall into the same hole that I did with bad consequences.

Never fails with the Sweden bashing. What you got on your pizza was probably Parmazano which is a dairy free replacement and not a cheese. It`s actually made out of soybeans;

It was Parmesan, as in the cheese that goes on spag-boll (not the vegan replacement) But don't worry, the pizza maker didn't look ethnic as old Fred would say. So you can rest easy knowing that you can try and use daily mail senationalism as a form of deflection claiming that he was not a true swede.

Either way, if you ask for food without an ingredient ... It doesn't automatically mean you are allergic to it. It could be as simple as not liking the taste of it.

Byke, in fairness, your spelling of PARMESAN was atrocious the first time round, so it's quite understandable that another user thought you meant the cheese substitute that they mentioned. Your spelling was more similar to the name of that, than parmesan.

I wonder who it is who has a twisted psyche when it`s you who meantion Sweden when it comes to a salespersons wrong action in your mind. Even though almonds are not nuts. That would only make sense in a bitter mind. But apperently it`s nationalism that makes me point this out and not common sense...
