Swedish Monthly Salaries

How far will it go?

Will a salary of 28-29,000 support a family in Sweden? We would not have much of a mortgage but only one income. Would we be scaping the barrel each month to make ends meet?

It might it might not. Will you live in Stockholm or in a little country village?. One child or ten? However based upon all factors being the minimum cost yes you can survive. Start adding in additional factors and it will be harder and harder.

Only got 2 kids, 5 and 11, thank goodness! Would be looking for somewhere affordable and commutable to / from Taby. Will initially rent out house in UK to cover cost fo renting in Sweden and then look to buy after 6-12 months.

Any info / advice gratefully received.

Foreign property that is rented is taxable ... so beware.
Realistically its going to be tough, very tough... you may just be able to do it, but is it worth the risk with 2 children?

Personally I wouldn't do it.

If that's pre-tax I would say it is on the low side, especially for Stockholm. If you live on the countryside, very far from Stockholm, you could probably live well on that salary, but in Stockholm it will not last long.

Maybe a reasonable benchmark to use is Migrationsverket own calculation of funds that a non-EU (yes I know you are EU) citizen must have if they come to Sweden to start a business with family.

For 1 year they need:
100.000 (you) + 50.000 (partner) + 25.000 (child 1) + 25.000 (child 2) = 200.000 SEK minimum!

If you are paid say 29.000 /m = approx 22000 /m after tax = 264.000 /year.

Migrationsverket often use quite low figures, in fact their minimum amount per month for work permits is 13.000 SEK, which is often quoted outside Sweden as Sweden's minimum wage.

You are on the edge, for accomodation since there are 4 of you will not be cheap.

And as an earlier poster stated, You will be taxed on the rental income from UK.

(dont forget, kids clothes in sweden are more expensive than UK!, no zero VAT rating here)

It may be do-able, but You really need to consider the time it will take for your partner to find work, and until that time what the quality of life will be like ?

How will the kids react, it will be easier on the 5yr-old with regards language, but the 11yr-old will find it a bit harder at school ... and then less spare money available also!

Yes, the biggest issue by far will be to find affordable housing. A family of four will cost at least 10-15k/month just in rent/mortgage unless you have been in the housing queue for years.
