Hi Locallers,
Has anyone applied for extension when their visa has not expired. I have been on a work visa for 4 yrs but my visa expires next year (the reason is that I have change several employers but I have accumulated the four years) Though my visa expires in about a year, I have applied for extension and i stated i wanted a permanent residence. Any experience here? |

As a general rule you don't ask for PUT, they assess your case and if you are eligible they provide it.
For the rest of it, you will only get an accurate answer when Migrationsverket assess it. It depends on information in your case file regarding how they handled your case regarding the changes in employers and when it occurred. It would have been wiser to wait until closer to the end date of your current permit unless you were required to apply for a new permit due to change of employment. |

MV will not consider your application until your permit is about to expire. You must wait.

I need the PR to get financial aid for studies. I will be taking a break a to study this August. So I had no choice...but to apply...I need the PR....
I think the rules must be changed to be able to apply for PR....the current process is too subjective....where someone (if he is not in a good mood that day can simply say no) Many countries have PR application forms...even my so called developing country... |

If you stop working you will no longer be on a work visa then must apply for student visa. Your student visa time does not count towards PUT. You need unbroken work, residence time so after studies you may have to start again with time starting at 0 years.

Best of luck to you however MV has no reason to even consider your application and will not until near the expiration of your current permit.

Yes, best of luck!
It is good that you informed them. I take it that you have permission from your employer to take a study break and that you have written confirmation that you will have a job to return to after the study break? I realistically think the best thing to do is to talk to your case worker and explain the situation clearly and concisely. They may be able to give a better understanding of how they may approach it. |

If I am your case officer, I will give you 5 years extension to your work permit, after which you will be eligible to PR. Of course, I will not deny your visa. |

Good thing you aren't his case officer, then. I also sincerely hope there aren't as many people who are clearly as vindictive as you are at MV.

Yes as opposed to the OP, fraudulently completing the application form, applying for CSN directly, then having Migrationsverket withdraw his PUT and having him expelled from Sweden! The OP said study break. This does not mean that he is quiting his job. It may be a short course that the OP wants to undertake that improves his standing with his employer. The OP's job contract may not be impacted and may allow for a study break. |

The point is moot. Migrationsverket has rules and protocols they must follow. There is no separate application for PUT. Only when applying for an extension can a PUT be granted. MV will only consider a visa extension when the old one is due to expire not a valid visa with one year left on it. If anyone could update and extend their visa at will MV's workload would triple overnight. Waiting times are very long as it is. MV can not take someone in essence out of queue, consider his application while others are waiting 10 months. Every time a couple is about to break up file for new visa extension. Might loose job, visa extension. MV knows this and the rules are clear. I sympathize with the OP but feel he will have to wait until his work visa needs to be renewed or apply for a student visa.

That is why a simple phone call to Migrationsverket and a couple of well directed questions would have been better than an application!
Also why it is better that the OP makes that call now. I do think that the OP should be commended for attempting to follow the rules even if it was somewhat misplaced! |
