I am moving to Sweden, in a town just outside of Linkoping in mid August in time for the start of my masters programme which starts at the end of August. I love sweden, and on and off have spent about 10 weeks or so in the country...so I kind of know what to expect, or do i? I suddenly feel abit nervous as the next time I shall be setting foot on Swedish soil I shall actually be residing there and studying?
So anyone else recently moved to Sweden, and any tips? Even better...anyone recently or is in the process of Moving to Sweden to study? I just want to settle and make friends and enjoy the scandinavian way of life |

One thing you could do is join one of the four active nation clubs in Linköping and take part in their events. It`s a great way to find friends and get to know some of the students there. Some also offer some work which gives an opportunity to socialize.
You have Smålands nation; http://www.smaland.nation.liu.se/ http://www.facebook.com/groups/119189241439217/ Västgöta nation; http://www.vastgota.nation.liu.se/wga.html http://www.facebook.com/groups/117235831647903/ Wermlands nation; http://www.wermland.nation.liu.se/english/ http://www.facebook.com/groups/4796932723/ Östgöta nation; http://www.facebook.com/pages/%C3%96stg%C3...289764554396192 I guess you could also try volunteer work which can be a good way to find friends. It can be a long shot however since it can be people from all ages or walks of life and it means that you have to work aswell. http://www.volontarbyran.org/volontarbyran...volontarer.aspx |

QUOTE ...how to make friends in Sweden? sounds to me like a screeplay for a new Mission Impossible movie. |

Congratulations and welcome.
Applied ethology and animal behaviour is just around the corner from my dept. in the B-House so swing by and say Hi. All the biology people are really nice too, a very social bunch. Hopefully you have accommodation already secured. It's really crazy that time of year getting a roof over your head. Get involved with the activities in zero week (Nollningar) much hijinx to be had and friends to be made. You'll need Green overalls and football socks. Although the socks might change colour during the upcoming weeks if you're lucky. PM me if you have any further Q's. I'm very familiar with the goings on at LiU or can quickly ask around. Who's going to be your Supervisor? |

Thanks for the advice :-)
I shall get onto checking them links out Migga, thanks! Not long now! I will be moving to sweden a week before the intro week and have accomodation sorted already, In a nearby village called Boxholm with my Svensk boyfriend (so no swapping socks haha!)...so that's handy as it's not too far away on the train- it's just finding my way to the uni from the train station to the campus, but I'm sure I shall find my way! Looking forward to meeting some fellow biology students :-D Also when does the LIU zero week begin, hopefully I will be there for it...and how do you find out about the events/activities? and my supervisor is Eva Mattsson, she seems really nice and helpful from the emails :-) |
