Hi, I am planning to study in Sweden for a couple of years. Which one of these universities would you recommend for me to do a Master of Computer Science?
Karlstad University, Malmo University or Halmstad University? Also, out of these, it seems only Karlstad translates to a proper "Universitet" (sorry, I don't speak a word in Swedish but I can translate this one!) and the others to "Hogskolen" which is worryingly similar to High School??!?!! Does it actually mean anything? Any advice? Thanks. |

Don't mind the Högskola vs. University thing. KTH is also högskola, but it is top in some technical areas. That being said, I haven't heard much about those three universities.
I would suggest have a look at the staff pages to see who publishes what, and try to find a person that works on a topic that you would like to write your thesis on. You can check the published master theses to see how many of the student were doing it for/at a company, if that interests you rather than an academic career. |

This is a good idea, thanks for answering and clarifying about the terminology... I am applying for a Master at KTH as well, but to start only in one year from now... these Universities I've mentioned are the only ones still accepting students to start in Autumn 2012, so I just want to find something now to get studying as soon as possible, really...

Chalmers is a great one. The guy who invented the Torrent sharing studied there.

There is a difference between colleges (Högskola) and high schools (Högstadiet/Gymnasiet)
A högskola is a college that teaches or conducts research in a limited capacity compared to the big general Universities There are 2 main types 1. the specialist högskolor that are world leaders in a specialised field but limit their activities to a certain area - for example KTH, , SSE etc. These are highly sought after and have an international reputation There are also the technical institutes - specialist technical colleges such as Chalmers/KI - also big international reputations 2. the regional colleges that may not offer all types of courses, may not conduct research in all areas and may focus to a certain extent on local industry/job market with industrial courses and vocational degrees (nursing/teaching/technicians etc). They may not be able to examine their own PhD students and may need to import temporary staff for certain undergraduate degree courses. The regional colleges have varying reputations but are often not well known internationally and some can be preety poor (then there are the big general Universities such as Uppsala/Lund/Gothenburg/Stockholm/Umeå + the newer ones formed from previous högskola/technical colleges or mergers Linköping, Örebro, Karlstad; Mitt, Linné etc etc |
