Have had a letter from Bilprovningen calling me for a new check of my car but 6 months after my last one - is this normal ? due to the car's age ? Previously it has always been an annual check

The general rule is if the car is 5+ years old it should be annual. The last digit of the registration number determines the period it should have the test, regardless of when You had it last tested, check the table here:
http://korkortonline.se/teori/besiktning/ If You were late with the previous test there is good chance it is due again within 6+ months. |

Yes, you get a couple of months either side of your official month to have your vehicle inspected. One month longer, from memory, if your last digit is a 5. So is it possible that you last had your vehicle inspected late in your inspection period and that you're being called this time at the start of your next inspection period ?
