Hi all, just got my first parking ticket! I thought it was a parking spot but obviously not - it was issued at 1:30am so these guys don't sleep!

Can anyone explain or maybe give me a link, as to how and what parking signs mean?

I'm sure when you first drove, it was all a bit confusing!

I see some signs that:
- only have a "P" So do I have to pay?
- have a "P" with "avgift" under it (but no times specified). Does this mean charges apply 24/7?
- have a "P" with "avgift" and then "boende" in a white box (black txt) under that. Does this mean only resident permit holders can park there? or charges apply 24/7 but also designated for residents (boende)?

- "avgift" with a time THIS ONE I GET!
- "avgift" and mentions blå eller röd bilijet. what are these blue and red tickets?!
- finally I have been told that times in brackets are for saturdays and red txt = sunday + holidays.
- I am also aware of the street cleaning rules

If someone can explain then thanks in advance! also let me know any other parking tips and stuff to look out for!

This will probably help:

As to the P sign by itself, note that in Sweden, unlike other countries, it means you can only park for a maximum of 24 hours. Not knowing that got me my first (and only) parking ticket in Sweden...

- A blue P means parking for max 24 hours on weekdays, and no time limit on holidays. It is enough to just move the car a few inches every day so that the wheels are in a different position each time; the parking attendants often mark the wheels with a crayon.
- If it says avgift without specifying times it means you have to pay 24/7.
- Boende means that a residential parking permit is allowed. If it is just a P with boende under you have to have a residential parking permit. If it says avgift too, then others may use the spot.
- Blue and red tickets refer to the different parking zones in Stockholm, red being more expensive than blue tickets.
- Times in brackets indicates days before public holidays or Sundays. Times in red means public holidays or Sundays.

The multi tier signs can be a bit tricky. Basically you read from the top down. The sign below shows the limitation for the sign immediately above. Your assessment of the signs is correct. "P" means 24 hour parking. "Avgift" underneath means that you have to pay a fee, "(0900-1600)" below that means that the Avgift (note: not the parking) restriction applies only between those hours. Outside of those hours you can continue to park under the normal rules for a "P" sign on it's own.

01.30 am!? What the hell!? I've never experienced or heard of anybody getting a parking ticket at that unholy time. And I'm a truck driver and meets a lot of peoples so naturally I get to hear a lot of things that's strange or odd, things that usually doesn't happens I will in one way or another hear about. Are you sure that it's a legal ticket? that it's not a fake one.

Heh, if this is true I've learned something new but anyway I'm going to move my car to be sure to not get a parking ticket.

Good luck.
