Hello all.
Myself and my girlfriend recently became parents. I'm from England and she is from Finland. Does anyone know if our child should get a Swedish, Finnish or British passport? We both want our child to have part of our national identities but he will be raised in Sweden so it's only right that in the future he will be a "Swede" I have no problem whatsoever with him being a Swede but does just being born here mean he can get a passport straing away? Thanks in advance for any help (forgot to mention, we are not married!) |

Congratulations! To answer your question, your child is not a swedish citizen. They can become one in the future, but Sweden only "transmits" nationality by blood (jus sanguinis) not by birth in Sweden (jus soli). According to Finnish law, your child is a Finnish citizen [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_nationality_law#Birth]. According to British nationality law, it would appear that your child is also a British citizen [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law#British_Citizenship_by_descent]. That language is unclear there, but I think that that is what it says =) Personally, I would register your child's birth with both Britain and Finland =) Finnish citizenship gives your child a lot of rights in Sweden, and they can become a Swedish citizen either if/when you do, or when they reach 18 if they fulfil the requirements (there are a few ways to go about it). |
