I am going to the states at the end of the month and wanted to bring surströmming with me so the family can try it. I saw that British Airways has banned it on flights since 2006 but was curious if anyone has brought any with them and had any issues i.e exploding, leaking. Any airline?

How long did it take you to think about that answer because it was genius?

I have mailed it. Wrap it in multiple plastic bags just to be sure and inform the recipient that the can will look near exploding when received but is safe to eat. If you are fond of the recipient you probably would not have shipped it to them in the first place but I would also advise the recipient to open the can under water(full sink or big pasta pot).
