Hi Guys,
So I have landed a pretty good job, eager to start and get stuck in. I have been granted residency (waiting for my card, had my photo taken this week) so I went to skatteverket and filled out the form but was then told I cant get my personnumer without showing a copy of my residence card. Why is this? I have read of people getting their number straight away?? Really frustrating because I cant start my job until I have this number...or get a bank account. Driving me nuts. |

Wait 3 or 4 days for the card to arrive, then return to the tax office.

Probably because Skatteverket do not share systems with Migrationsverket, i.e. they have no idea that you have a residence permit until you get the card. Here you have a guide. Although it is made for researchers at KTH, it applies pretty much to everyone: http://www.kth.se/en/om/work-at-kth/swedis...orities-1.42087 |

Thanks for your help guys!!
I'm going there the day it arrives, any idea from personal experience how long it will take to get the number? They have all my forms, just waiting to add this one to my file. |

Also, your work should not be contingent on your personal number.

You wrote in the other thread that you are from the UK. I answered you there.
Basically you are an EU citizen and whoever told you that you need a residence card is talking crap. I don't know who granted you residency, but as a UK citizen you don't have to be granted residency. You already have it right to residence as an EU citizen and shouldn't have to have had your photo taken or any of that stuff. |

Sorry, I was incorrect. The employer can require personal number for you to start your employment. However, if you lack bank account, they should pay you in checks until you have opened an account.

Aaaahhhh oddsock are you serious?!
Man I swear I have been told the incorrect things by people at various offices, the only people who seem to make any sense are you guys! Well hopefully my gf will be home soon, going to ask her to call up skettervekt asap and see what is going on, the sooner I get this number the better. Yeah, I'm going to ask my boss about cheque's or paying into my gf's account until I get mine set up. Thanks again guys! |

I went into Skatteverkan and had my personnummer in 3 days. I have no residents permit yet.
I was hoping to avoid the long wait for this but it seems its unavoidable. After getting my number the bank will not open an account for me until I have a Swedish ID. I'm from Ireland so they say it could take 6 months to swap my license. I have never been to a country so slow in my life. No bank account for 6 months means problems getting paid and I really dont want to wait that long for my first paycheck. I need to check to see if there is another option in terms of ID on Monday. |

I am also from Ireland. Came here over three years ago and still have no Swedish ID. No need for it.
You have a personnummer. Do you also have a work contract? I went to a bank with my printout of personnummer from Skatteverket, my passport and my work contract. They wouldn't give me a bank account without Swedish ID. I told them to stick it, went to another bank and got an account there. Moral of the story is to keep looking around until you deal with somebody who actually wants you as a new customer. Try Länsförsäkringar Bank, they seem to be be rooted in reality. Nordea and Swedbank are hopeless juggernauts They even invested in Anglo Irish, that will tell you how clever they are. Swedish driver's license will cost you 750 SEK to convert from Irish one. I never bothered. It's money well saved. As for residence permit, you don't need one. You can register yourself with Migrationsverket if you plan to stay for more than three months, but that's not a residence permit. That's just you letting them know that you plan to stay here as an EU citizen. It's more for them than for you. |

Yes I have a work contract. I start work on Monday 6th August. I have called all the banks in my area. None will open an account for me without Swedish ID. I suspect things were easier three years ago.
DO you know what the quickiest way to get some sort of ID I can open an account? |

Don't know if you're staying in Sweden permanently, but you could be invalidating part of your car insurance by not converting your driving license after 2 years. |

Yes - Swedish banks have hugely clamped down on opening accounts the past 5 years. I opened one in 2002 with just a passport. A friend opened an account 2 years ago by going into a more rural branch of SEB with his passport and his father-in-law signing some sort of waiver, after being rejected by pretty much every bank in Gothenburg, so there's clearly some sort of discretion of the bank manager involved - try this. |
