Hello there
I am currently working as a substitute teacher not on any sort of contract. In a week i generally get 4 days of work. I am needing to get surgery and will not be able to work for 3-6 months. I know its not likely but was wondering if there was any sort of government help?

A little info
I am a resident of sweden and an EU member, I pay my taxes. I have only been living here for a year though and working for 6 months..

Thanks

You need to contact Försäkringskassan and see what your sick pay level SGI is (based on your earnings in the previous 12 months) - you can get up to 80% of your salary for the first year of sick leave

Sick leave in Sweden is based on your ability to work and not the medical condition - so it will depend on how your doctors describes your situation on the Försäkringskassan forms

There is a system of sick leave tarriffs which sets out how much sick leave you can normally expect for each condition - in addition you can be on part-time sick leave in Sweden - so even when you cannot work full time or need to attend treatments of physio - you may be expected to work part time unless there are special conditions. Försäkringskassan may also organise transport to work if it helps you stay in work

Thanks for your answer, going to go into see them on Monday just wanted to know my chances of getting some support. Very stressed about how I will pay bills the months I can't work. My only cOncern is, is there a minimum that I have to have already worked, do I need to have had a job for at least a year? I'm sure I'll get all these answers. But it's just good to do some research myself! Thanks

Försäkringskassan has a brochure in English about sick pay - however you may need to call them to get specific answers

as you are self employed, if the state doesn't pay out much, you might want to consider some insurance. So if you have an accident, say fall and break an arm they'll pay out either a lump sum, or loss of earnings depending on the type of scheme you choose. I have one that encompasses critical accident/illness as well.
