I did my homework and had a job lined up even before i moved over here and arranged to stay with friends until I was settled but the job fell through 1 week before the start date and i had already moved here so now i am in this situation and was hoping to be working by now but clearly that has not happened.
I was unlucky that the job fell through, there was no way of knowing this was going to happen and now im here and I have to deal with it, that is why i am on this forum to see what is available and see what my options are. I am not trying to be an idiot i am just trying to be calm and think 2 months down the line and see what will happen. |

Sorry to hear that your job fell through. But if you really want a new start, I think its better for you to try other English speaking countries. Without the knowledge of Swedish, it is almost impossible for you to get a job in sweden (unless you are some IT gick with at least a bachelors degree). Ain't trying to discourage you here, its just that the next 2 years will be the toughest time in your life if you decide to stay in sweden, even with a personnummer, SFI, etc. But eventually, there will be light at the end of the tunnel only if you pay the price and don't give up during your armageddon (which is almost impossible in most cases). But seriously, asylum is not an option for you. Good luck.

If you want to learn Swedish you don't need to wait to start SfI - you could be waiting some time if that's the case. You can normally register at the city library without a personnummer - this is free and grants you access to beginner level books so you can start learning the language.
Get on facebook and arrange to meet other expats. If there are any språkcafeet (language cafes) around in your area attend them - they are a great way to meet people and improve your confidence in speaking Swedish. I got a job interview through one and that was on my third visit, I just let it be known I was new to the city and seeking work. I'm not sure what your area of work is but I've found admitting your linguistic capabilities to potential employers is a good start. Contact companies directly, if you send emails always follow up with a phone call. |

If the job fell through then I think it`s time to cut your losses and return home. I must say that it sure sounds strange to recently arrive in a new country, start your "new life" and only bring enough money for a few months rent?

As a short term thing you could try English themed pubs and bars that sometimes employ native English speakers
Keep an eye on the site Jobs in Stockholm http://www.jobsinstockholm.com/ Also keep visiting the job centre site as most jobs are posted there - do searches using English words to find jobs that accept English speakers www.arbetsformedlingen.se |

Did You have a written contract for the promised job? If You have then the employer cannot just break it 1 week before start. Even if the contract had a test employment time, during that test employment period by law there is a notice period of 2 weeks, and often if the employer has a collective agreement with the Union it is 1 month. Reason I mention this is that to cancel the job before it starts means the employer could be liable to pay you a minimum of the notice period, eg. 2 weeks or 1 month. Mind You it has to be taken to Arbetsdomstol for judgement.
If it was a verbal contract, then that too under Swedish law is a binding contract, however the situation is more difficult since it is often hard to prove anything about verbal contracts. With EU Freedom of Movement, You could be entitled to unemployment benefit from the UK, but You have to register with the job center here in Sweden (Arbetsförmedlingen) as a job seeker. However, it appears You quit Your job in the UK to move to Sweden, so I am not sure what the benefit rules are in the UK. Remember, without being able to support yourself, somehow, you can only stay in Sweden for 3 months max. Do as suggested, go out and trawl the pubs and restaurants ... maybe You get lucky |
