Hi all,

I am from the Seattle, WA USA and I will be coming to Sweden in February for a month to work on an internship for my employer. I am wondering how the gay life is in Sweden and what would I need to do to get by and have fun while I'm there.

Any pointers or suggestions?

Thanks!

Depending upon where you move you may find you are "the only gay in the village"

Unlike North America where the gay social scene tens to be gathered in 'gaybourhoods' the scene in Sweden's major cities tends to be spread out and well integrated into the regular nightlife of the the cities. Have a look on http://www.qx.se/gaymap/?country=185

Just google "feminine men Sweden" and you will find a plethora of articles describing the "Swedish men". Its a sausage fest ...

Wrong forum to ask the question. This one is dominated by homophobic straight men from the UK, so imagine what kind of answer you can get.

What city are you going to be in?

A fear of homosexuals?
How has anyone on here shown any sort of fear or phobia relating to homosexuality?

I love it when trolls throw out words hoping that such strong name calling will allow people to act in disgust rather than question the value of their response. What will we see next - false claims of rape in a hope to draw attention away ?

straight men

Ooh such contempt.
How bloody dare them.

Swedes are pretty liberal about homosexuality so you'll find that refreshing. In saying that it's easy to mistake a hipster as gay, so prepare to have to adjust your gaydar a bit. Luckily the average Swedish male is more likely to take that as a compliment...unless you live in the north, best not to hit on anyone with long hair and a Metallica tshirt (vom).

While your definition of 'phobia' is correct 'homophobia' is more broadly defined as

"irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals"

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/homophobia

Similar in the way that 'misogyny' used to refer only to a hatred of women it now includes discrimination towards women - language is a fluid, ever evolving phenomenon.

For example how "gay" used to mean happy/cheerful. tongue.gif Not that you can't find a gay gay I guess...hehe. But yeah, as mentioned above LGBT culture isn't quite so segregated as it is in other countries, seems in Sweden people are able to party with people regardless of sexual preference. wink.gif

That must be because you haven't caught on to klubknickers yet. A troll of the worst sort, I fear, and one that pops out of the woodwork from time to time to spread her drops of vitriol and scorn on anyone and anything British. Just ignore it, and it will go back under a rock again for a while.

Klubknickers has definately got a screw loose. For somebody that hates the English so much it makes you wonder why she lives there.
