Residency Card Asked for at Skavsta

Has Anyone Else Experienced This?

Last week I was flying to the UK and showed my UK passport at immigration. The guy asked for my "Residency Card". Assuming he meant my "legit", I showed him my ID card which I have had for 10 years.

No, he actually meant a "residency card" (he showed me his own). The guy was perfectly charming, almost helpful to the point.

Is there a real risk that one day I won't be allowed back into the country. First time this has happened in 10 years.

Anyone else had this problem.

Are you an EU citizen? In that case they can never deny you entry unless you have been previously deported (from being convicted of a serious crime). Also, AFAIK EU citizens don't get a residence card unless you have a PUT, so it sounds like the guy didn't know what he was doing (quite common among public officials).

I must admit, when I first got my residence card I understood the onus is on you to present it at Swedish immigration.

There was a line on the 'Information' sheet Mvkt gave me (along with the card) that said:
"Bring your UT card when you are travelling. You must show the card along with a valid passport at a border crossing
when entering Sweden.

I am in a strange situation.
I hold a UK passport, but also have full dual nationality (UK / Swedish).

And I have never been asked to produce a residency card, nor would I be able to.
I have been stopped one time at the Malmo border crossing, but a UK passport was enough (God bless the empire).

I just wonder, worst case scenario ... to what degree are "Swedes" meant to prove or show their right to be - if they dont hold a Swedish passport? / how else would authorities check?

Thats totally wrong, the official has no rights whatsoever to ask for any type of residency card especially if you are an EU citizen, what if you are a tourist??? well he might be a rookie but at the same time, he should use his brains assuming he has one!!

Hmmm ... I would tend to disagree with that.

Where does it state in the Freedom of Movement directive that there is no right to ask for Residency Card? I would add that it actually states otherwise. Member States can check compliance if national legislation requires non-nationals to carry their registration certificate or residence card. But only if there is a similar requirement applies ot nationals and identity cards (this is not the same card that non-Swedish citizens can get from SV).

A residency card!? what's that, is it like a visa? I thought these things were only required for non-EU citizens.

I'm from the UK, I registered my right to residence, which was accepted and I have a personal number... I thought that was all I needed. No?

Exactly, EU residents normally don't carry resident cards, and even if they did the officials cannot do anything if you lack one, since EU citizens always have the freedom to travel across EU borders anyway.

Yes. The old stickers in passports for UT and PUT permits have been replaced with Cards with photo. In addition to that You can always get a PUR card as well. ...There is someone making a fortune from providing these card making machines and consumables. biggrin.gif

Maybe there is mixing up some things here ... Freedom of Movement & Right to Reside and Schengen convention.

UK opted out of the Schengen agreement, which means there are border controls.

But no matter if it is Schengen or not border control cannot stop you if you have an EU passport, so asking EU citizens for residency card is quite pointless...

EU citizens who have uppehållstillstånd are required to get a uppehållstillståndkort.

Unless they have reason to doubt your identity which I would assume can be applied as loosely as they please.

Just for the sake of being pedantic wink.gif , yes they can. You can be refuse entry for reasons of Public Policy, Public Health or Public Security. But the authorities have to prove that the threat is sufficiently serious, and you are entitled to the decision in writting which includes details of how it can be appealed.
