Yorkshireman is 100% correct. Someone with a Swedish licence who went to live in the UK would have to renew their licence in the UK and also pay £50 for that. It is the same principle in every EU state. Important to note that when up for renewal you must apply in the country you are resident. The rules are clear and simple.
There are always those who don't like the rules and try and bend them. |

Let me explain for you in simple terms:
Irish person in Sweden whose license is about to expire wants a new license. Cost: 750 SEK Swedish person in Sweden whose license is about to expire and wants a new license. Cost 150 SEK Conclusion: Irish person person pays five times more than Swede in Sweden Irish person in Ireland whose license is about to expire wants a new license. Cost: 55 EUR Swedish person in Ireland whose license is about to expire wants a new license. Cost: 55 EUR Conclusion: Irish person and Swede pay the same in Ireland. Apparently this is very difficult for some people to comprehend. The costs are high in Ireland, but this is due to the crisis. The point is that all EU license holders are treated equally in Ireland, which is in the spirit of the EU. |

Apparently this is very difficult for some people to comprehend. Yes it is, especially for you ...it goes like THIS: An Irish person in Sweden CANNOT RENEW an Irish License, they MUST EXCHANGE the license, that effectively renews it at the same time. It costs 750:- A Person in Sweden with a Swedish issued license CAN RENEW, it costs 150:- whether Irish person or any other person... A Swedish Person in Ireland CANNOT RENEW a Swedish license, they MUST EXCHANGE the license for an Irish issued one, effectively renewing it at the same time. It Costs 55 Euro A Person in Ireland with an Irish issued license CAN RENEW, it costs 55 Euro. So in both countries ... a license issued in another Member State when due to expire should be EXCHANGED for the Member State of residence issued license. Administration cost applies. In Fact, as I said earlier ...the rip-off is in Ireland ... once you have exchanged licenses it is much cheaper for renewals in Sweden than Ireland 150:- vs 55 Euro ???... is that their NEW MODEL for saving the country |

A person will renew their license on average say 5-6 times in their life and going on Net Present Value terms will cost in Ireland = €55*6 = €330 in Sweden the cost will be 750kr+ (150*5) = 1500kr A Swedish license will cost you half that of an Irish license over its lifetime... Spend the extra €20 quid now and save your money and hassle and time. Woof! |

Yeah sure, if one stays in their own country their whole life. Why don't we just abandon the EU and live in mud huts and never leave our own villages. |

And the difference between those two activities... (f.a.)^0.5 No one has said it isn't different in Ireland between exchanging a license and renewing. ...You are whining about a cost difference for renewal in Sweden. when there isnt one! To renew a Swedish issued license it costs the same for all EU Citizens. |

Ah yes, another person who fails to understand that 750 SEK > 150 SEK.
QUOTE You are whining about a cost difference for renewal in Sweden. when there isnt one! I can see now why you do well in Sweden, do you work for Posten? Well, my good pedant, allow me to be pedantic back. I have written: "Irish person in Sweden whose license is about to expire wants a new license." Contrary to your claims, I don't see the word "renew" anywhere in that sentence. Depending on what pedantic and extreme view one takes, one could also argue that it costs 600 SEK to exchange (not renew) an EU licence in Sweden, and 0 EUR to exchange an EU licence in Ireland (after which you pay the standard fee to get an Irish licence issued, like all other Irish people.) |

Nice try, but No!, because it specifically states that the fee is 55 Euro for the exchange: From 1 January 2013 the fee for exchanging a full driving permit issued by a recognised country for an Irish driving licence is €55. |
