has anyone used one of these things yet? apparently is a gizmo you stick into your phone and payments can be made to your account by card.

My wife uses one of these regularly, here in Stockholm. Works with both Android and iPhone and is stocked by a number of retailers. If I remember correctly, you are given a credit of 200 SEK which covers the purchase cost. I think its the least expensive of all merchant card systems for low-volume sales. The proceeds show up in her account in just a few days and customer service has answered the few questions that she had. Go for it!
