Sweden's Best Museums

Stockholm City Museum (Stockholm Stadsmuseum)

Stockholm City Museum gives visitors a tour through the Swedish capital's seven-and-a-half centuries of history. The city is assumed to have been founded in 1252, when it was first mentioned in written records. Exhibitions range from medieval themes like religious art and coin collections, to industrial period photographs and school records, to modern furniture design, cinematic work, and scientific research. Another aspect of the museum's activity is education and preservation of the city's residential buildings, most of them constructed between 1880 and 1975. The museum works closely with schools and also offers tours around the city, including visits to museum apartments from the 1880s, 1910s, 1930s, and 1960s, providing an intimate view of life at home. Nya Torget is a playroom designed especially for children, imitating a town square, complete with vegetable, fish and grain vendors, a candy stand, and everything you need for a shopping trip in the town.
