Sweden's Best Museums

Färgfabriken Stockholm

The Färgfabriken gallery has gained a world-wide reputation for its exhibitions. The New York art journal Art Forum named it one of the top ten museums of the year in 2003 and 2004. Färgfabriken calls itself a "laboratory of the contemporary." It cooperates with academic institutions like the Royal Institute of Technology, but wants to ensure that the dialogue continues into the public sphere. The topics are usually political, sociological, or philosophical. An exhibition by Fredrik Wretman revolves around an ecological approach to fish farming, and uses artistic cinematography to make his point. Another by Andreas Ackerup is an introspective showcase of self portraits, one taken every day over a ten-year period. A collaboration between MTV and Färgfabriken shows MTV clips and graphics from different countries, as a study of and statement about international pop-culture. A provocative gruesome sculpture by famous director David Lynch was created for the Cow Parade but was considered too offensive to be shown in public. Färgfabriken was the first museum to exhibit the sculpture. Mats Theselius brought his collection of Soviet-made everyday objects, as a comparison to Western-made items created for the competitive market.
