The Maritime Museum (Sjöhistoriska museet) presents information on maritime trade, naval defense, and shipbuilding. It was inaugurated in 1938, during a period in which preserving Swedish cultural history became popular. The architecture of the building is designed to resemble the lines of a ship. The museum has hosted over 300 exhibitions in its time, on subjects randing from pirates to swimsuits. Visitors are able to tour interiors of ships, admire artistic adornments, and learn about navigational instruments and weaponry. Another responsibility of Sjöhistoriska museet is to assign cultural certificates to private boats with historic significance. The museum also educates the public by running an youth sailing school and classes about the rules of the sea among other things. It is intimately involved in all aspects of Swedish maritime life.
