Circus accused of breaking animal welfare rules

A German circus has been blamed for mistreating its animals and "caused chaos" at its last show in Huddinge, said Tuesday's Svenska Dagbladet.

According to Swedish regulations the animal boxes used by Circus Mustang aren't big enough and animal welfare inspectors have highlighted the lack of fresh food. A fight erupted when animal rights protestors organised a demonstration before the show last Saturday, and one man had to be taken to hospital.

Members of the circus believed the complaints were racist and may be aimed at the German workers in order to get them out of Sweden.

"The circus should have been given a list of Swedish animal welfare rules and regulations as soon as they entered Sweden," said Ulla Bergström at Huddinge Local Council.
