A hole in my audience figures

Lukas Moodysson's new film has punters walking out of the cinemas, and he's being called "an uncompromising sensationalist, a politically correct fundamentalist, a trendy anticapitalistic moralist". Moodysson himself is saying that the film perhaps should not come out on video - to prevent it from falling into the untainted hands of children.

As Mariah Larsson put it in Sydsvenskan, "Moodysson has made a film that's hard to like".

The film, A Hole in My Heart (Ett hål i mitt hjärta), had a good opening week, but people have been walking out - mostly older folks, according to Dagens Nyheter. SF Bio decided together with Sonet (the film's distributor) to place a warning sign about the film in their theatres and apparently at least some ticket sellers have been asking, "Do you know what the film is about? We need to check; some people are sensitive".

The film is rated '15 and over', and in a television interview Moodysson alluded to his discomfort with the idea that children might be able to watch the film if it came out on video.

In an interview with Dagens Nyheter Moodysson waffled on the question, as well as on whether a partially-censored version might be released. The film has been sold for release in a number of countries; apparently screenings in the USA and Great Britain will go uncensored, while screenings in China might end up missing a bit.

Despite a strong opening weekend A Hole in My Heart has fallen to 13th place on the Swedish film charts. It might not be around forever, so it's probably best to see it now if you'd like to - it might be your only chance to see the film in its full naked glory.
