New Stockholm district "unsafe for children"

Plans to build a new district in Stockholm's Kungsholmen have been strongly criticised by both researchers and city developers, according to DN on Sunday.

Up to 3,500 new homes are due to be built in the area, which means there won’t be much space left for children's play areas and outdoor spaces. Nurseries and schools are being pushed to the edge of the development areas, and one existing nursery is already bordering a busy motorway, reported DN.

"Green spaces are like breathing areas for children where they can play safely without having adults right beside them all the time", said Maria Nordström at the University of Stockholm’s Institute of Culture and Geography.

"Not to give two hoots about children's outdoor space is shortsighted. It will be expensive in the long run."
