But according to Dagens Nyheter the boy involved in this case was 14 when he visited the politician's flat several times between 1 September and 31 October 2003.
The paper said that the politician has stepped down from his responsibilities since the story leaked to the police and the press, and is "taking time out" whilst the case is going through court. He is currently in police custody.
"It isn't illegal to have sex with young people over the age of 15," said prosecutor Martin Bresman. "This is specifically about an under-age victim and that is all we are concerned about in this case."
Bresman also says he is confident that he has a strong case against the man.
In an interview with Radio Stockholm on Tuesday, Bresman emphasized that there was no suggestion of any "incidents of threats or violence". But the police will be checking if the man actually paid for under-age sex or not. According to police tip-offs the man often cooked a meal in his flat and provided alcohol in exchange for sex, said DN.
The man's laywer, Hanna Wiksten, told Radio Stockholm that her client denies the allegations and maintains that he was told the boy was over 14 years of age. She also confirmed to the radio station that no "drastic decisions" regarding his future work in politics would be made at this point.
It appears from a report in Svenska Dagbladet that the initial complaint to the police came from Social Services.
The case is expected to be heard in court by 6th December.
