A 69 year old man has been sentenced to five years in jail after subjecting his stepdaughter to violence and sexual abuse for eight years, according to Metro and Svenska Dagbladet.

Stockholm district court heard that the "terror" started when the girl was eight years old, in the early 1990s. During her teenage years she was raped a number of times and lived in constant fear. The girl is now 20 years old and it has been proven that the repeated rape has physically damaged her body.

The woman told the court that she hid a large number of knives in her room to use "in self defence".

The story leaked when the girl went to see a counsellor after she tried committing suicide in her teens. When she felt she was strong enough to talk about the abuse she finally reported her step-father to the police.

The man is also liable to pay the girl half a million crowns in compensation.
