Swedish police to investigate poker sites

DN and SVD reported on Monday that the Lottery Inspection Authority may begin reporting internet poker companies to the police.

They want to find out if some of the organised poker companies which are registered abroad are actually operating from Sweden. That would make them illegal, explained DN. Only Svenska Spel is allowed to arrange and organise poker games involving money in Sweden, said DN.

Svenska Spel only has four casinos around Sweden in which they can arrange games, but with online poker games attracting millions of kronor a year, the organisation wants a piece of the action, said DN.

Last Friday the company applied to the government in order to get a licence to trade online.

“We are debating whether we should report tip-offs and our own discoveries to the police”, said Jessica Jeppsson, legal spokesperson at the Lottery Inspection Authority.
