Honest tax non-payers

For the first time, Sweden's tax authority, Skatteverket, has conducted a major investigation into the 147,000 Swedes who ought to pay tax but don't.

During 2004, 7,000 individuals were investigated with over 250 million kronor being recovered for previous non-payment of tax. Skatteverket, nevertheless, claims that the majority are not cooking the books.

Over 80% of those not paying tax have a legitimate explanation: some are studying; others are supported by their partner.

“A number have moved abroad,” says Anders Stridh, a spokesperson for Skatteverket.

The review has also uncovered a number of fraudulent unemployment claimants as well as a number of people illegally claiming housing benefit.
