Fourteen apartments were destroyed by a fire in the centre of Kristianstad on Sunday night.

An entire block of flats and shops were destroyed and Torgny Ekholm at the rescue services in Kristianstad described it as "a very difficult job" extinguishing the fire.

The building by the square Lilla Torg is a hundred years old and has been renovated several times.

The building now appears to be beyond repair. A large area around the property has been closed off and the fire brigade had to use so-called "smoke divers" to get to the affected area.

The attic, which was converted into flats, is severely damaged, while the rest of the house has been badly ruined by smoke and water from burst pipes. The living quarters in the building are wiped out, while many shops at the ground floor of the building have had their stock and interior destroyed.

The rescue services eventually had to concentrate solely on preventing the property from collapsing, although it now seems there isn't much that can be restored.

"Those who had private flats in the building will receive some compensation so that they can equip themselves with basic necessities", said Christer Johansson at Länsförsäkringar insurance company. He told Expressen that it is "too early to establish what the exact cost of the damage is".

But with up to fourteen people having lost their homes, it is expected to run to several million kronor. The residents are now in temporary housing.

The fire is thought to have started in one of the attic flats and two young men were questioned by the police on Monday. No people were hurt or injured, according to Expressen but up to 30 fire-fighters were involved in the operation, which lasted most of Sunday night.
