"We are active in a number of similar assignments throughout Central and Eastern Europe, where the various countries are taking measures to improve their environmental performance", says managing director Per Johansson.
SWECO VIAK will investigate the emissions produced by the city's existing treatment plants and industries. The municipal sewage network will also be studied and a programme of remedial measures formulated.
The assignment is being carried out on behalf of the water utility Vodokanal in St. Petersburg with funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The contract for the work is worth a reported 3.5 million kronor.
