Japanese 3G-operator KDDI has sold 5 million songs for downloading onto mobile phones since November. The company's music service "EZ Chaku-Uta Full" uses Stockholm company Coding Technologies' sound software Mpeg-4 aac-plus.

Customers can listen to each track for free before downloading at a cost of 19 kronor.

"EZ Chaku-Uta Full have shown its more than just a gimmick to sell whole tracks for mobile phones," vice president of Coding Technologies, Pelle Bourn, said in a press statement.

"Our service is growing extremely quickly," Makoto Takahashi, a spokesman for KDDI said. "With [Coding Technologies'] aac-plus it's possible to download music more quickly and with better sound quality."
