The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet's Buddhists, arrived Sunday in the southern Swedish city of Gothenburg for talks with the archbishop of the Swedish Lutheran Church, K.G. Hammar, a church official said.

The two spiritual leaders were expected to discuss spiritual values before an audience of about 6,000 people, according to Michael Persson, a spokesman for the Lutheran church.

The two will also inaugurate an international centre for cognitive therapy, he said.

The Dalai Lama's interest in cognitive therapy, a treatment for depression and other psychological problems, stemmed from a collaboration between Tibetan monks and researchers who study the effects of meditation on the brain, according to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to travel to Norway on Tuesday.
