Feminists’ support plummets

The Feminist Initiative has lost one in three of its supporters since last December.

According to a poll conducted by Sifo for Aftonbladet, only fifteen percent of voters now say that they would consider voting for a feminist party. In December 2004 this figure was 22 percent.

Gudrun Schyman’s party, which has not yet formally decided whether to compete in next years parliamentary elections, has been damaged by the string of scandals to hit the wider feminist movement.

Chief among these was the television documentary Könskriget, in which the head of women’s refuge organisation ROKS, Irene von Wachenfeldt, was recorded describing men as “animals” and “walking dildos”. Von Wachenfeldt claims she was quoted out of context.

But Mikael Gilijam, a political scientist at Gothenburg University, told Aftonbladet that he thought that the people would have put the scandals behind them by the time of next year’s elections.

“The political memory is short,” he told the paper.
