Lightning struck an egg production plant in Mörarp, outside Helsingborg, on Thursday, causing a fire which killed 17,000 hens.

The lightning hit the roof of the giant hen house, run by the company Aniagras. But according to local paper Helsingborgs Dagblad it was not the fire which caused the deaths but "a powerful pressure wave which spread through the building".

"There are 17,500 [hens] in the building but we've seen a few alive on the lower level," said the managing director of Aniagras, Carl-Rudolf Palmgren.

Palmgren told Swedish Radio that the cost could be up to a million kronor.
