A 20-year old man has been crushed to death at a recycling depot in Västerås, west of Stockholm.

The man, who was working at the Grytatippen recycling centre, had climbed inside a machine used for crushing wastepaper before it is recycled. The machine started whilst the man was still inside, said Carina Lundén of Västerås Police.

Lundén told news agency TT that the man should not have been inside the machine, but said that she couldn't say why the accident had happened.

Three witnesses have been taken to hospital in Västerås suffering from shock. They have therefore not yet been able to give police an account of the events leading up to the man's death.

The man, who had a summer job at the centre, had only started there five days earlier.
