A man from Skåne in southern Sweden has died after apparently being stung by his own scorpion.

Early on Monday morning he was spotted through the letterbox to his apartment by a person delivering his newspaper.

Ambulance staff rushed to the scene and broke into the apartment, where they found an overturned terrarium and the scorpion on the loose.

The man was taken to hospital where he later died.

"Our hypothesis is that he died after having been bitten by the scorpion, but we don't yet know the exact cause of death," said police spokesman Charley Nilsson to Svenska Dagbladet.

"The post mortem will tell us that," he added.

It is unclear how the scorpion came to be out of its terrarium but police said they do not suspect any foul play. The scorpion has been recaptured.
