The whole of the Gothenburg area was hit by a major disruption to Telia's telephone service on Tuesday afternoon.

"It began at 1.10pm and we still don't know what's causing it," said Susanne Sturmhoefel in Telia's press office to TT at around 2pm.

Fixed telephone lines, the mobile network and data traffic was affected but the problem was said to be sporadic.

"The disturbance is coming in 30-second intervals. We have technicians out tracking down the source of the problems."

By mid-afternoon Sturmhoefel declined to say how many people had been affected but it could be as high as 10,000 customers.
