New leader for Sweden's republicans
Sweden's Republican Association has chosen a new leader.
The anti-monarchist group, a cross-party organisation, chose Social Democrat member of parliament Hillevi Larsson to succeed Liberal MP Birgitta Ohlsson, who has held the position for three years.
"It's absurd that the Swedish people can't choose that nation's highest representative, the head of state," argued Larsson in a press release.
"Sweden is a modern democracy, but we're still represented by a hereditary monarch who is not subject to democratic control."
"This is not good marketing for Sweden, it's jjust embarrassing!" Larsson intoned.
