A thousand pigs were burned to death when the farm building they were in caught fire on Sunday evening. Only 300 pigs at the farm in Glömsjö, outside Vetlanda, were saved.

The fire brigade was called to the scene just before 10.30pm, but the building was already consumed by flames.

Around fifty firemen fought the blaze and managed to save a nearby cowshed with around a hundred cattle, according the the head of the rescue team, Torbjörn Ek.

Many of the pigs who survived bolted onto the nearby main road, the 127, where the speed limit was reduced to 30km/h.

"There were no accidents," said Torbjörn Ek.

The fire was put out at around 1.30am.
