Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson has opened the world's largest summit which is set to approve a watered-down blueprint to restructure the embattled United Nations on its 60th anniversary.

Persson chairs the summit as Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson presides over the incoming General Assembly session, which got under way Tuesday.

The three-day gathering, held under draconian security brings together more than 170 leaders, including US President George W. Bush, his Russian and Chinese counterparts Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao along with Prime Ministers Tony Blair of Britain, Dominique de Villepin of France, Junichiro Koizumi of Japan and Ariel Sharon of Israel.
