Unemployment fell in August

The Swedish unemployment rate rose to 6.5% of the workforce in August, up from 5.9% a year ago but down from 6.9% in July, Statistics Sweden said on Thursday.

A total of 304,000 people were out of work last month, compared to 268,000 in August 2004, while the number of employed persons totalled 4.34 million.

“The increase (year-on-year) is among young persons,” the statistics agency said in a statement.

Sweden has since April used the European Union’s harmonised method of calculating the jobless rate, and therefore the agency said it did not have any figures that take into account seasonal adjustment.
