Two British animal rights activists and five Swedes have been arrested and remanded in custody in Sweden after holding illegal protests at three pharmaceutical companies, police said on Tuesday.

"I can only say that we have remanded in custody seven animal rights activists, including two British citizens. They are all suspected of trespassing," Gothenborg police official Jarl Winqvist told AFP.

The seven were arrested in Gothenburg last week.

Winqvist would not disclose the names of those arrested, but according to the website of the British organisation Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) the seven were members of the group.

Gothenburg daily Göteborgs-Posten reported that one of the Britons was Heather Nicholson, a leading member of SHAC who has fought for five years for the closure of the Huntingdon Life Sciences group which carries out laboratory testing on animals.

According to SHAC, the seven were arrested for holding illegal demonstrations on the grounds of pharmaceutical groups Bayer, Fujisawa and GlaxoSmithkline.
